Belize is a birder's paradise,
with a diversity of habitats making
it home to over 570 species. Exciting
and endangered species such as Jabiru
Stork, Scarlet Macaw, Sungrebe, Orange-breasted
Falcon (right), Harpy Eagle, Solitary
Eagle, Crested Eagle, Ocellated Turkey
and Chestnut-bellied Heron, to name
but a few, are rare residents in the
Belizean rainforests and swamps.
There's a huge diversity of the
more regular Central American bird
species, and Belize is also the winter
home for many migrants from North
America.
Shorebirds can be found in the coastal
areas of Belize where large tracts
of mangroves and cayes provide a suitable
habitat. Twenty-two species of hummingbirds
inhabit Belize.
Both casual and serious birders
will appreciate birding with our excellent
guides and having the opportunity
to add several endangered or rare
species to their life lists. Belize
is a destination worthy of several
visits.
There are many excellent birding sites
right across Belize. We lead tours from
the duPlooy's Jungle Lodge (the rainforest
along the Macal River being one of the major
attractions in the region) to the most important
birding sites in the Cayo district and beyond:
Central Belize
Elsewhere in Belize we recommend these well-known
birding sites:
Northern Belize
Southern Belize
